We all know that Philly and the surrounding area is a haven for top-notch entertainment, and all of that talent will be on full display this month with the return of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. This three-week arts celebration features more than 1,000 performances—across every genre, interest and format—at a range of local venues, including several right near your Dalian on the Park apartment. Many of the shows, scheduled for Sept. 5-22, are low-cost or even free, so if you’re looking to get a taste of the Philly entertainment scene for less, don’t miss this opportunity!
If you want to get in on a truly unique performance experience, check out “The B Side” Sept. 5-8 at FringeArts, two miles from your Dalian on the Park apartment. The show is produced by The Wooster Group and is based on an old LP one of the performers came upon. The recording was made in a segregated prison for African-American men in 1960s Texas, and featured songs, spiritual gatherings and more. Three performers bring those men to life, singing and acting out the LP in its entirety, with another narrator providing commentary on the context. Inmates on the recording share insight about their day-to-day life, the cultural challenges of the time and the struggles of isolation from their families and communities. The show, performed a cappella, has been called “transcendent” by the New York Times and offers an eye-opening, firsthand look into a setting long forgotten to history.
Tickets range from $39 for general admission to $15 for those 25 and under and just $2 for theatergoers who grab an all-access Fringe pass. Check out the full Fringe lineup for this once-a-year opportunity to get a front-row seat at Philly’s booming theater scene.
