If you’re an art lover, you’ve likely been to many of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway’s famed centers of art. While Philly is a great place to explore masterpieces from some of the world’s leading artists, it’s also a space where you can see emerging artists in action (and be able to count yourself among one of their earliest fans!).
The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts is a haven for up-and-coming student artists, whose work is exhibited in grand fashion every May. The 118th annual Student Exhibition opens at PAFA, less than a mile from your Dalian on the Park apartment, on May 9, giving locals access to more than 1,000 one-of-a-kind pieces from homegrown talent. The exhibition will feature paintings, sculptures, drawings, multimedia pieces and much more—and all will be up for grabs!
Purchasing art may seem like a prospect that would break the bank but, since these are emerging artists, the prices will be much more reasonable. If you’re looking to spice up the wall décor in your Dalian on the Park apartment for the spring, or score a new centerpiece that will have your guests gushing, swing by the exhibition to see if there are any pieces that are a good match.
Even if you’re not in the market to buy any art, a stroll through the exhibit is a unique way to enjoy a different side of the city’s arts scene. While the big art museums offer plenty to see and do, the new perspectives and talents on display at the PAFA gallery are enough to get you thinking and may even spark your own creativity.
One of the best ways to take in the show is through its Preview Party, which will be held from 4-8:30 p.m. May 9 at PAFA. Enjoys cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as you take in the art and mix and mingle with some of the city’s leading arts figures. All of the students whose work is included will be in attendance as well, so you have the unique chance to gain some added insight into their work.
In keeping with the theme of supporting emerging artists, all proceeds from the preview party will be contributed to scholarships to help students attend PAFA.
