Even if the closest thing you have to being French is loving fries, you can pretend for the day at Bastille Day at Eastern State Penitentiary!

The world-famous celebration, held three blocks from your Dalian on the Park apartment, returns for its 24th year on July 14 at the historic prison. The event is a tongue-in-cheek reenactment of the storming of Bastille during the French Revolution, which, considering the setting at the castle-like penitentiary, is very realistic! Tour the prison throughout the day and then settle in for a performance by experimental cabaret troupe The Bearded Ladies at 5:30 p.m. They will recreate the pinnacle of the French Revolution while also putting some hilarious modern-day spins on their comedic commentary. The troupe is an award-winning group of performers who fuse drag, dance, acting, song and comedy for a weird and wild, yet always entertaining, show.

Make sure you get there early to get a front-row seat for the highlight of the event: the flinging of 2,000 Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets into the crowd as Marie Antoinette yells, “Let them eat cake!” It’s a tradition that is entirely Philly!
